“Most Christians are attending church less often and most local churches are engaging the Great Commission too seldom. That’s not by accident.”
We have a problem that can no longer be dismissed.
For generations, church leaders have replaced the purpose of the Church with a systemic preoccupation with programs. As a result, church attendance is plummeting, as culture continues to move further away from a biblical morality. Today, only 21% of non-believers have a positive perception of the church; only 50% of non-believers would trust a pastor; 53% of pastors have seriously considered leaving vocational ministry; and Millennials generally think the church is irrelevant to their lives.
The solution is as old as the Church herself.
The solution is not better websites, more comfortable seats, or more gifted preachers. By the way, we love all three! But the answer is to simply (albeit not easily) realign our lives and ministries with the Great Commission, the only thing Jesus gave us to do between the day He left and the day He returns.
Our mission:
The Oikos Movement seeks to help local churches better align with the Great Commission by (1) helping pastors learn the oikos principle’s biblical significance in the proclamation of the Gospel, (2) helping the local churches they lead to leverage the oikos principle’s power through a simple and focused strategy, and thereby (3) accelerating the growth and community-wide impact of local churches around the world.
Picture your life as taking place in a theater, one that’s filled with all of the people in your life. Some are sitting in the balcony. Others in the mezzanine. Still others are sitting down in the orchestra section. To some degree, they may all be able to see the way you behave or listen to what you say, but it’s those eight to fifteen people in the front row who have the best seats in the house to do both. The Greeks called that inner circle of “extended family” our oikos. When you ask someone, “What is the primary reason you decided to give your life to Christ?” the answer is typically not a what, but a who. Their answer will revolve around someone in their oikos 95% of the time. So, it’s obviously a big deal.
The oikos principle is certainly not an evangelism program. It’s not just an event. It’s not just a church emphasis. Actually, oikos is like a worldview, set of lenses through which you can more simply and efficiently align our lives with the Great Commission.
The more familiar you become with the oikos principle, the more you’ll discover that oikos (a Greek word) is embedded in the New Testament. Effectively leveraging the oikos principle can provide you with a heightened sense of purpose and fulfillment, and give you confidence to make an impact for God’s Kingdom in your world!
